The Play’s The Thing
Open 12 – 7.15pm
After three years of closure, The Play’s The Thing will reopen on 22 अप्रैल 2023.
Step inside let your imagination fly as you discover over 100 years of theatre-making magic.

Containing items from the RSC Collection, one of the most significant Shakespeare and theatre collections in the world, and curated in collaboration with three Stratford-based community organisations (GAGA Yarn Bombers, Welcome Here, and second-year fashion students at Stratford-upon-Avon College) our free The Play’s The Thing exhibition offers a unique insight into the history of theatre-making in Stratford-upon-Avon, viewed through a contemporary lens.

Within the exhibition, as well as seeing costumes and props from the RSC’s history, there will also be a video presentation of the Three Gold Threads / ثلاثة خيوط ذهبية project. The RSC’s Creative Placemaking and Public Programmes team has worked with artist and composer Liz Gre and 9 local women who are part of the refugee community to explore the often overlooked and untold stories that surround Shakespeare’s First Folio, and readdress the balance of who engages with Shakespeare’s stories.

The Play’s The Thing is located in the Swan Wing of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s buildings. Entrance is free, and the exhibition will be open from 12noon daily, closing at 7.15pm (5pm on Sundays). No advance booking required.

12 – 2PM: Meet Artist Liz Gre में The Play’s The Thing to talk about the process of making Three Gold Threads, the work she has created with 9 women, part of the community Welcome Here. This new audio-visual piece is inspired by Shakespeare’s First Folio.

12 – 4pm: Community Inspiration stations

Each station will be connected to a community group that curated The Play’s The Thing with us and can be found in the Swan Gardens or Swan Wing.

Swan Reading Room Beading station: Be inspired by the beaded jewellery created by people that GAGA support in South Africa and make your own beaded piece of jewellery.
Colonnade – Eid Lantern Station: Celebrate the start of Eid with Welcome Here participants and make your own lantern to take home.

Swan GardensDesign Station: Design your dream costume or wildest fashion accessory with our creative design sheets and fabric scraps from the costume department.
